Weekly update #5

Hi again - time for my weekly solopreneur update!

Month 2 is starting off great, I've doubled down on the bike shop niche.

I made a really good connection this week while trying to learn about the industry - I cold emailed Phil Latz, an industry insider who publishes the Latz Report and the Latz Yearbook, a magazine listing all the suppliers in the industry in Aus, thay is in literally every bike shop in the country. Phil got back to me right away and we setup a chat! Super nice guy, he spent almost an hour of his day chatting with me about the newsletter idea and giving me some advice. I'm super grateful for that chat, it really gave me some positive energy, and he had great ideas, especially validation that bike owners are a great target market for marketing automation. They are time poor, often not as business focussed as some SMB owners, and willing to spend on tools that do a job for them. This is exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for in reaching out to him. Thank you Phil! Hopefully if I can get this product off the ground, I'll be able to advertise on his site and in the Yearbook.

So the running idea, and thanks again to my Dad for giving me this idea, is a monthly email newsletter of high quality biking content delivered to a bike shop's email address. There's a whole bunch of rabbit holes I'm thinking about, but I reckon this can work. A big challenge of this to get it off the ground is going to be sales. I'm going to need to reach out to these shops cold - they aren't searching online for the product. Time to put my extrovert hat on 🙀! Today I drafted up an example email of the kind of content I'm thinking about. This is just in google docs, so the actual email should look better:

mikes bikes riders digest newsletter

The idea is to get bikers to look forward to these monthly emails, keeping them engaged with the sport, and keeping the shop that sends it to them top of mind.

I did just OK on the habits this week (it looks great but the hard one is the 20 mins of running / weights each day). That's the real easy one to slack on, as well as the no drinking as that is an anxiety crutch I've relied on for a long time. I've added in "❌ 🍔 🕘-🕐" - my intermittent fasting from 9pm-1pm. It is pretty hard when you are getting hungry at 11am, but I really like the feeling of agency in my life - I feel in control.
